Is the Erhu Easy to Learn?

There's a common perception out there that the Erhu is the simplest among string instruments to pick up. But how true is that, really?
If we look at prominent string instruments—like the violin, viola, cello, Erhu, Banhu, and Zhonghu—each has its unique charm and complexity. The most significant differences lie in their number of strings. Western string instruments like violins, violas, and cellos typically have four strings, while traditional Chinese instruments like Erhu, Banhu, and Zhonghu have just two.
Does fewer strings mean easier to play? Not necessarily. Yes, having fewer strings reduces complexity in finger placement and tuning, but each instrument brings its own set of challenges.
Violin techniques, for instance, are notoriously challenging—high-level skills like ricochet bowing, natural spiccato, and intricate double stops require significant practice to master.
The Erhu, while simpler in structure, has its own distinctive techniques—like sliding with a padded finger (dian zhi hua yin), throwing bow (pao gong), and pressing vibrato (ya rou).
However, even these unique techniques are typically less demanding than advanced violin techniques such as double stops, advanced bowing methods, or complex fingerings.
So, is the Erhu truly easier? In many ways, yes. Its simpler design and more straightforward basic techniques make it more approachable for beginners. While mastering any instrument requires dedication and practice, starting your musical journey with the Erhu could indeed be a smoother path.
But remember, easy to start doesn't mean easy to master—the beauty of music always lies in the depth and passion you bring to it.
